Hallucinations
Definition:
A sensory experience that
seems real but is created by your mind. They can affect all five of your
senses.
There are 5 types of
hallucinations based on the 5 human basic senses
Visual hallucinations
Seeing something that does
not exist and exists at the time includes objects, visual patterns, people, or
light.
Olfactory hallucinations
Disturbing the olfactory system
such as smelling a foul odor when waking up in the middle of the night or
detecting a foul body odor even when not.
Gustatory hallucinations
Similar to olfactory
hallucinations but involves the sense of taste of the tongue.
Auditory Hallucinations
Hearing someone talk or
telling to do something. This voice can be angry, neutral, or friendly.
Touch Hallucinations
Involves the sense of touch
or movement in the body. Examples include feeling insects wandering in the
hands or internal organs moving on their own.
Causes:
1. Use of hallucinogenic
substances such as alcohol and drugs
2. Not enough sleep
3. Mental illnesses such as
schizophrenia and dementia
Complications:
1. Decreased performance at
work or school
2. Failing in relationships
3. Disrupts daily life
Treatment:
1. Psychotherapy
2. Counseling
