Definition:Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) is a disorder in which people have recurring, unwanted thoughts, ideas or sensations (obsessions) that make them feel driven to do something repetitively (compulsions). Symptoms: 1. A need to have everything in a certain order. 2. Excessive washing or cleaning. 3. Repeated checking (such as checking that the door is locked or that the oven is off). Causes: 1. Family history: You may be at greater risk if there is a family history of the disorder. Research has shown that if you, a parent, or a sibling have OCD, there is a 25% chance that another immediate family member will also have it. 2. Genetics: Although a single "OCD gene" has not been identified, OCD may be related to particular groups of genes. 3. Stress: Stress from unemployment, relationship difficulties, problems at school, illness, or childbirth can be strong triggers for symptoms of OCD. Complications: 1. Excessive time spent engaging in ritualistic behaviors. 2. Difficulty attending work, school or social activities. 3. Poor quality of life. Treatments: 1. Counselling 2.
