Definition: A delusion is a belief that is clearly false and that indicates an abnormality in the affected person's content of thought. The false belief is not accounted for by the person's cultural or religious background or his or her level of intelligence. Symptoms: 1. Irritability, low mood or anger. 2. Hallucinations (seeing, hearing, or feeling things that are not really there) that are related to the delusion. 3. Have an unshakable belief in the untrue, and despite the evidence to the contrary, usually continue to believe in this illusion. Causes: 1. Genetics: Children born to parents with schizophrenia may have a higher risk of delusions. 2. An imbalance of neurotransmitters (chemical messengers in the brain) may increase the likelihood of delusions. 3. Trauma and stress. Complications: 1. Frustrated 2. Violence 3.
